Leadership principles from Nehemiah (hm):

  Leadership principles from Nehemiah:

1) man of prayer, ch 1, 2:4, 4:4, 4:9, 5:19, 6:9b, 6:14, most of ch 9, 13:31

2) He knew where he was going (see Seger’s definition, Introduction of Chief). More than that he was utterly captured by what needed to be done. He was burdened. ch1

3) He started where he was. He didn’t wait for a promotion. What can I do now? (end of ch 1, beginning of ch 2.

4) Clearly in 2:5, & following, he had a plan in mind.

If you are working by yourself, you can make things up as you go along, though there are dangers there. Even in a solo-operation, planning has to stay ahead of execution enough so that you don’t have to undo things. You do have to know what you want in the end. Know where you are headed.

5) Don’t always tell everything you know. Timing of information is important. 2:12>>

6) Look at 2:17 >> In what ways did N. appeal to the interests of the people he was leading? Also 4:14

 7) Dealing with opposition, 2:19 >>, ch 4

8) 3:10, “opposite his house.” Also 3:28 & 29, 3:1 “sheep gate” – priests.

9) Gave credit to others. Ch 3, 4:64:9 & 13,

10) Sometimes you have to do 2 things at once. 4:13 & 15-16

11) 4:21-23, just plain hard work. Relate this back to delegation.

12) Ch 5, N. commitment to justice & generosity.

13) Be careful with this, but Nehemiah made his point by talking about his own good behavior, end of ch 5

14) “No good deed goes unpunished.” 6:1-10

15) Hang in there. Keep going. Ch 5-6.

16) 6:10-12, Courage!

17) 6:15-19, let your accomplishments speak for themselves. In the dark times look back on past accomplishments.

19) 7:1-7, When God grants a blessing, use it right.

20) There are different seasons. Recognize that. Ch 8, & 9

21) Never fail to make a big thing out of a good thing, ch 12.

22) Ch 13. After you start something good, you have to maintain it. 2nd law of thermodynamics.
