Session #1, Handout

Session #1 notes: Some of you may not have gotten the information about who I am, so let me tell you a bit about myself. ·        I am married to Kathy. She is the daughter of the man who was my pastor during my childhood and teen years. I came to know the Lord, in part, as a result of Kathy’s mom’s ministry to children. ·        We have two sons and seven grandchildren. ·        I attended Appalachian Bible Institute (now, College) and Baptist Bible College (now, Clark Summit University), achieving a ThB. Later, during my years as a pastor I attended Liberty Seminary and earned my MA in Religion. ·        I was lead Pastor of the Covington Bible Church for forty-two years. I continue to hold the title of Pastor Emeritus. I’m currently the Interim Pastor at Woodland Church. ·        Through a set of circumstances to compl...

Leadership principles from Nehemiah (hm):

Leadership principles from Nehemiah: 1) man of prayer, ch 1, 2:4, 4:4, 4:9, 5:19, 6:9b, 6:14, most of ch 9, 13:31 2) He knew where he was going (see Seger’s definition, Introduction of  Chief ). More than that he was utterly captured by what needed to be done. He was burdened. ch1 3) He started where he was. He didn’t wait for a promotion. What can I do now? (end of ch 1, beginning of ch 2. 4) Clearly in 2:5, & following, he had a plan in mind. If you are working by yourself, you can make things up as you go along, though there are dangers there. Even in a solo-operation, planning has to stay ahead of execution enough so that you don’t have to undo things. You do have to know what you want in the end. Know where you are headed. 5) Don’t always tell everything you know. Timing of information is important. 2:12>> 6) Look at 2:17 >> In what ways did N. appeal to the interests of the people he was leading? Also 4:14   7) Dealing with opposition, 2:19 >...

DEFINITIONS OF AND STATEMENTS ABOUT LEADERSHIP

Leadership is both a research area and a practical skill encompassing the ability of an individual, group or organization to "lead", influence or guide other individuals, teams, or entire organizations.  Wikipedia “ Leadership  is the art of getting someone else to do something you want done because he wants to do it.” — Dwight D. Eisenhower. “LEADERSHIP IS NOT MAGNETIC PERSONALITY, THAT CAN JUST AS WELL BE A GLIB TONGUE. IT IS NOT “MAKING FRIENDS AND INFLUENCING PEOPLE”, THAT IS FLATTERY. LEADERSHIP IS LIFTING A PERSON’S VISION TO HIGHER SIGHTS, THE RAISING OF A PERSON’S PERFORMANCE TO A HIGHER STANDARD, THE BUILDING OF A PERSONALITY BEYOND ITS NORMAL LIMITATIONS.” — PETER F. DRUCKER “BEFORE YOU ARE A LEADER, SUCCESS IS ALL ABOUT GROWING YOURSELF. WHEN YOU BECOME A LEADER, SUCCESS IS ALL ABOUT GROWING OTHERS.” — JACK WELCH “THE TASK OF THE LEADER IS TO GET HIS PEOPLE FROM WHERE THEY ARE TO WHERE THEY HAVE NOT BEEN.” — HENRY KISSINGER “TO LEAD PEOPLE, WALK BESIDE THEM …...

THE BIBLICAL BASIS FOR CHRISTIAN LEADERSHIP

Image
THE BIBLICAL BASIS FOR CHRISTIAN LEADERSHIP Goal: Arrive at a biblical model for Christian leadership that fits the context in which you are working. (Note, when you see "Micronesia" or "Micronesian," substitute your own context.) Be able to compare and contrast the class definition of leadership with a baseline definition. Class definition of leadership (for a Christian organization or church): A leader is a godly servant who knows where he is going and inspires and equips others to follow. Baseline definition of leadership: Leadership is the skill of influencing people to work enthusiastically toward goals identified as being for the common good of the group. THE BIBLICAL TEACHING ON LEADERSHIP - Matthew 20:20-28 According to Jesus, how do worldly leaders use power in leadership? They use it to dominate, lord it over, or enforce their will over others. They use their high position to exercise power over others. The goal for people using the worldly leadership mod...

Useful Resources

This list is like an old preacher's library, not very well organized, but, there is good stuff there.  The book by Robert Coleman, The Master Plan for Evangelism, is a classic. You can find free pdf copy here .  Here is a summary , pdf, of the Dan Allender book, Leading with a Limp , that I mentioned.  I gave you a caution about this book. Sometime after writing this Hybels sinned in a way that caused his removal from ministry (A lesson in itself), however, I include this summary of his book, Courageous Leadership because it is an excellent book,  https://coindy.squarespace.com/s/Leading_With_A_Limp.pdf I mentioned Two books in Session 2: Anderson, Dr. Daniel L.. Biblical Slave Leadership: A Stewardship from Above to Lead from Below . Regular Baptist Press. Bremner, Dave. Images of Leadership:Biblical Portraits of Godly Leaders. Oasis International Ltd. I couldn't find a link to get at these for free. I encourage you to read them, if you can get them. Eidersheim is ...

Beatitude People

The Beatitude People In reality, Beatitude People cannot help being the way they are.  They are the way they are because they are partakers of the Christ-life.  These characteristics, known as the Beatitudes, are the qualities of life that God’s children receive from their Heavenly Father.  These blessings are the gifts of a loving God to His people. This is why people-of-the-world and Beatitude People are so different; Beatitude People live because Christ lives within, the people-of-the-world live lives of the flesh.  People-of-the-world are prone to:       Be prideful,       Rejoice in sin,       Assert themselves at the expense of others, and         They crave the thing...
